Jackson Hole

During the past ten years JHMR has taken steps that has earned the reputation as North America's best expert ski resort. It is a ski resort that is worthy of its reputation as being the Steep and Deep go to area with european style open boundaries.

The new tramway is the most recent addition to an already modern lift system, that swiftly moves skiers around the 4000' + summit of Rendezvous Peak. Of any ski resort in the US, this is one that it really helps to know where you should be going. Thats where Olympic Gold Medalist, Tommy Moe comes in. As ambassador of the resort, he has done his "due diligence " with the exploration of the in bounds and out of bounds areas the resort offers. Tommy will ski you through steep gladded tree shots on the North faces and the big side-country chutes when the conditions permit.  Beyond the skiing, Jackson has so much more to offer outside travelers. With two National Parks and wilderness abound, travelers can easily find additional activities to fit their schedule. Try a snow machine trip through the park, dog sledding, or tandem paragliding of a summit. One thing is for certain.

Travelling to Jackson Hole during the winter has never been easier.  The Jackson Hole airport has daily non-stop flights from seven US Cities on Delta, United, American, and Northwest Airlines. If you happen to live in any of the direct flight cities - Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City or Los Angeles - then you're one flight away. Everywhere else (in the world - almost literally) connects to one of these cities.  Easy.

Once you're here, things get much less complicated. Jackson Hole is a flat valley surrounded by mountains.  No mountain passes or canyons to negotiate, no city or highway traffic to stress you out... The airport is located in Grand Teton National Park, so fight (or ask nicely) for a window seat on your flight into Jackson.  It's a view you'll never forget.

Jackson Hole is surrounded by several mountain ranges: the Teton Range to the west, the Snake River range to the southwest, the Gros Ventres to the east and the North Winds and Yellowstone to the north.

When people hear about Jackson Hole, the range that first comes to mind is the Tetons. One of America's youngest ranges, the Tetons boast a dramatic collection of steep and jagged peaks. With no foothills on the eastern side of the range, the peaks appear all the more breathtaking. They look and feel overwhelmingly close.

To the south, the valley ends abruptly at the northern end of the Snake River canyon. The canyon starts about 10 miles south of Jackson Hole.

The Gros Ventre Mountain range is much older, wider and more rolling than the Teton range. It has great expanses of wilderness where one might not cross the road for dozens of miles.

It’s a little known fact that Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is as great a place for learning to ski as it is for cruising, long intermediate groomers.  Beginner and intermediate trails make up 50% of our terrain, meaning that our non-advanced/expert terrain acreage (1250 acres) is larger than many ski resorts' total terrain.  Yes, we're known for the Aerial Tram and expert terrain, but they're only half the story, with the Bridger Gondola and Apres Vous Quad accessing the mellow side of the mountain.  We highly recommend lessons with our Mountain Sports School, and if you're looking for a little more challenge, you might consider a Steep & Deep Camp or Backcountry Guide.

Like any mountain environment, the weather in Jackson Hole can vary greatly (and rapidly) during the winter.   Jackson Hole Mountain Resort averages 459" of snow each winter, but remember that's an on-mountain measurement.  The valley receives less snow each winter, but there will be snow on the ground all winter long, so plan accordingly.  The roads are rather flat and generally well-plowed, so if you're thinking of renting a car, know that driving in the winter is relatively easy.  It's not uncommon for us to get inversions, where the on-mountain temperature is actually warmer than at the base or in the valley.  In any case, plan to be in the mountains - during the winter - where the weather can vary, but no more so than any other high alpine location.
